Koorootang Highlander
Ready for Ladies Whip class, Qld Royal 2007
Koorootang Shetland Stud has been breeding and showing successfully for well over thirty years. The stud commenced with the purchase for one of our sons of a chestnut colt foal, Laguna Red Diamond, who later became a very versatile gelding. He was shown extensively in led, saddle and harness classes, competed at pony club, raced in steeple chases, and paraded at Warana processions. "Red" passed away a few years ago, after a number of years spent in peaceful, well earned retirement.
For many years Koorootang was a predominantly grey stud with Loch Lomond bloodlines — probably the biggest grey stud in the southern hemisphere. Koorootang's grey show team of the 1980s — Nacona Juanita, Nacona Anita and Nacona Navy-Blue were well known in Shetland circles in Queensland. Their dam was Nacona Anette and their sire Loch Lomond Clyde.
The Shetland Pony Owners' & Breeders' Society of Queensland's trophy for Most Successful Pony
for the Year (pictured) was won by Nacona Anita in 1982 and by Nacona Juanita in 1983, 1984,
1985 and 1986.
In 1987, with colt foal at foot, Juanita was judged Supreme Shetland Pony Exhibit at Royal Queensland Show. She was a consistent champion in the led classes and she and her sister Anita were also good harness and saddle ponies. Over the years they and their full brother, Navy-Blue, all won supreme ribbons.
We have shown Koorootang ponies almost exclusively for a very long time now and with the acquisition of the black stallion, Koolangatha Juniper by Wells Vintage (Imp), and later Koolangatha Powit, also by Wells Vintage (Imp), the tide turned and our show team today is predominantly black.
